Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion

Wolfgang and ElkeJan 10, 1953 – February 20, 2020

The BEST Collaborative lost one of its longstanding manufacturer members in February. Wolfgang Boecker, representing Fresenius-Kabi Transfusion Technologies, passed from complications related to chronic immunosuppression from medications taken following a successful heart transplant in 2002. A native of Hamburg, Germany, Wolfgang was trained as an anesthesiologist and practiced for several years in Pinneberg in Schleswig-Holstein. Wolfgang’s interest in transfusion took him to a position in the medical department at the Deutsche Rotes Kreutz West in Muenster. At the DRK he developed his skills in blood component production and efficient operations of production facilities. In 2006, he joined Fresenius-Kabi as medical director in the transfusion technologies division. In this role he helped many of Fresenius-Kabi’s customers optimize their production laboratories and supported the introduction of new technologies.

Wolfgang loved people, music, social events, and the Hamburg football team, HSV (Hamburger Sport-Verein). This led him to many rounds of golf, especially associated with the DGTI golf tournament, and many fun social events with colleagues and friends outside of work. He sang in a shanty choir, a choral group that sings only sea shanties, songs used by crews on large ships to coordinate activities such as pulling lines to sail the ship. He made friends easily and kept them for life.

Wolfgang is survived by his wife, Elke and his twin daughters, Julia and Linda.
